So you want a PhD
Wednesday, January 20th, 2010So you want a PhD. Why do you need a phd?
for glory, oooo a Dr;. for more knowledge; for a good career; for noble cause; or just nothing else to do?
Embarking on a career for Phd is to prepare you to be an independent researcher. Research is about finding answers. Answers to solutions. So to find answers, you must know the environment.
Read read read, know what you are dealing with or love to deal with. Then its time to find the loop holes. Why? is your friend. Why why why? then make a guess of why and you are on a your journey to prove your guess. Just like sherlock. A hypothesis and a proof. That is research.
Some researchers try to make their research sound complicated. but in our current work where public is power. Simplicity is your best friend. A professor once told me “if something is too complicated. Use the stupidiest way to solve it.” And once you do. use the simpliest way to explain it.
Writing articles
Saturday, December 5th, 2009Writing articles and publishing by M.Guan Lim
Hi, I see that if you are on this article, you would be interested in publishing or writing articles. There is not exact way of writing articles but perhaps the most easy way I would recommend is to first start of on a blog or online website. The benefits are that you are able to receive feedbacks on your work and it will most likely drive you in the right direction. There are a few good online and free blog services that will allow you to start without having knowledge of coding. I would recommend to try out Wordpress, Blogger or Microsoft’s Live Homepage. To get you started.

Living and studying in UK
Friday, December 4th, 2009Living rent in london is about £400 – £450 per month. For food, if you cook at home about £40 – £60 a week. Eating out is about £10-15 per meal. But its common to cook at home. Most cooked meals are italian such as pasta or pizza. and of course curry.
If you are living outside london, it is about the same in eating costs, but the rent is about £250-£300.
Remember to ask for grants. There are overseas student grants/bursary. if you are interested, visit the local british embassy to see if there are grants. or you can check their website.
Check the school fees. Its quite different from uni to uni. The last time i saw, its about ~£8000 per year for foreign students. Tips: Students in UK are allowed to work for 20 hours per week. and most uni students work here to cover their expenditure and get experience.
End of the day, no matter what the course is. Popular Unis are good. if you applying for UK universities, you have to go through UCAS. you can also visit their website for more information.
The best thing to study in UK is you get to travel alot. I mean ALOT! .. not only locally to scotland / ireland but also to Europe. The flights from UK to various european countries such as france, belgium, germany varies from £20 – £100 return. In some cases, there are £1 return flights which are cheaper than local bus travel.
Choosing a right subject
Friday, December 4th, 2009Coming out of college? or foundation studies? A common question for any youth is.
What should I study?
The answer is NO JOB is better than another. The key is to love what you are doing. This is as important as getting married.
So what is the best subject? Even many working class dont know that answer. As Zhuang Zi, a famous chinese philosophist said, Enoy life. I therefore quote, you have to enjoy what you would like to do. Of course, that first divides people into 2 categories. Are you working going to inherit a family business? have loads of money and do not know what to do? have a hobby and know that it will be your life choice or just a normal person who wishes that education will bring in more money. If you are the 3rd kind, I congratuate you. At least you know what you love and like to do and that is the most fulfilling thing that money cannot buy. “A fulfilled life”.
So life and subjects are of close relation. Remember what you are going to study is perhaps what you hopefully would want to know what to do in the next 50 years of your life. Is that the case? For many, its not. The reason is, with our limited experience and knowlegde, how can we decide what we are going to do for our entire life? University from what i can advise, is to arm you with the necessary knowlegde to be independant and learn to have methods to LEARN.
So what subjects are the best to learn if i do not have any idea. The most fundamental you can do is Maths, IT or Language. I could say those 3 are the basis of anything. Its very general and it gives you good foundation. Next learn from family and friends or older neighbours, uncles. etc. Learn by asking what they do and visit them. Get more hands on to what they are doing and see if you like it. Food, Manufacturing, Medicine, Dentistry, Architecture, Computers, Flight, Investing, Banking.. Mind you. I guarantee, they will give you an insight to what they are doing. If you are interested to know more, that I congratulate you again, you are on the right track to finding yourself.
ART ! ART !ART ! Everyone has to have art in one form or another. I am not saying to do it only but if you are into other subjects, Maths, IT, Language, do pick up something art related. Its the foundaments of Creativity and with creativity we can survive. Whether in Business, IT, medicine, can you see that creativity brings it another step futher? So what is art? Photography? Drawing? Sketching?Design These are all forms of art. I personally picked design and a bit of others.
So what should I pick?
So what should I really pick? I have to say, if you still do not have any idea with what you should do after looking around for weeks or months. I suggest you stick to something more generic like the following, IT, Accounts, Banking, Manufacturing or some form of Engineering. In the areas of Food, Flight, Transport, Investing, Gaming. These are common commodities, just like investing in stocks, you would need to look into something that is not going to change in a few generations. These are the few that is going to last and give you a job.
